Commemoration of 140th birth anniversary of an outstanding biologist Academician Pranciškus Baltrus Šivickis

On 30 September, the community of Nature Research Centre commemorated an important event – 140th birth anniversary of an outstanding biologist Academician Pranciškus Baltrus Šivickis. Commemoration events were organised by the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences, Nature Research Centre and P. B. Šivickis Laboratory of Parasitology. The grave of P. B. Šivickis at Vilnius Antakalnio graveyard was visited. An exhibition dedicated to P. B. Šivickis’ scientific activities and scientific heritage was opened. Memories about the Academician and his activities were shared by Full Member of Lithuanian Academy of Sciences (LAS), Prof. Sigitas Podėnas; Chairman of the Division of Biological, Medical and Geosciences of LAS, Full Member of LAS, Prof. Limas Kupčinskas; Head of P. B. Šivickis Laboratory of Parasitology, Full Member of LAS, Dr habil. Gediminas Valkiūnas; Dr Laima Petrauskienė, author of a book about Academician P. B. Šivickis; and winners of Academician P. B. Šivickis Award: Full Member of LAS, Prof. Vincas Būda; Dr Romualda Petkevičiūtė; Full Member of LAS, Prof. Vaidutis Kučinskas; and Academician P. B. Šivickis’ disciple Dr Tamara Arnastauskienė.

The scientific traditions of Academician P. B. Šivickis are honoured and continued at P. B. Šivickis Laboratory of Parasitology, which celebrates the 70th anniversary this year.

All are invited to visit an exhibition dedicated to Academician’s scientific activities and scientific heritage (Room 101, Akademijos St 2). This unique exhibition of documents and archives was prepared by Audrė Trumpienė and Sigita Dagienė, workers of NRC’s library.
