Over the course of numerous decades, the Institute of Geology and Geography of the Nature Research Centre has been compiling collections of minerals and rocks of great aesthetic, educational and scientific value. The stored collections contain over 5000 exhibits, including minerals, rocks, jewellery, meteorites and fossils. The compiled collection demonstrates a rich diversity of minerals and rocks of the Earth’s crust. A large part of collections was donated to Lithuania and the then Institute of Geology in 1965 by A. Žukelis (1899–1977), and nearly a 1000 agates were donated by a collector V. Matuzevičius.
