Greek Scientists Visit the Nature Research Center

On October 6–11, 2025, scientists from Greece Dr. Triantafyllos Kaloudis (Athens Water Supply and Sewerage Company – EYDAP S.A.) and Dr. Anastasia Hiskia (National Research Center “Demokritos”) visited the State Scientific Research Institute Nature Research Center (NRC).

The visit took place within the framework of the COST Action CA23160 (2024–2028) project “Effective Lake Management: Reducing Cyanobacteria by Actions in the Catchment (CYANOACTION)”. During the visit, Dr. Triantafyllos Kaloudis carried out a short-term scientific mission (STSM) titled “Cyanotoxins in Lithuanian Water Bodies”, and implemented a new method for the determination of cyanotoxins (microcystins) using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) in the Laboratory of Algology and Microbial Ecology.

This method is extremely important, as microcystins are the most common cyanobacterial toxins found in Lithuanian water bodies, with concentrations sometimes exceeding the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended limits for recreational waters by hundreds of times.

This new analytical method will enable NRC scientists to determine cyanotoxin concentrations in water bodies more rapidly and accurately, and to better assess potential risks to human health and the environment, compared to the ELISA method previously used.

During the visit, opportunities for further cooperation between the Greek researchers and the NRC laboratories of AMEL and APL were also discussed. Plans for joint scientific research, publications, and project proposals were established, further strengthening international collaboration and scientific advancement in this field.
