Virtual Conference for Women Archaeologists and Paleontologists: research, inclusion and community

On the occasion of International Women’s Day (5-7 March), the fifth annual Virtual Conference for Women Archaeologists and Paleontologists (VCWAP) brought together women archaeologists and paleontologists from around the world..

In this small anniversary year, the conference attracted a great interest, with more than 40 oral presentations, 43 poster presentations and 20 papers in the paleoart session. In addition, as every year, interesting scientific workshops were held. This year, the scientific workshop” The Art of Storytelling: Communicating Science through Powerful Stories” was run by Dr. Soledad De Esteban-Trivigno, the founder of the geoscience course platform “Transmitting Science”.

As every year, a Round Table discussion was held on topical issues for the scientific community. This year’s theme was “Bridging the gap: gender perception and inclusion in Archaeology and Paleontology”. The discussion was moderated by anthropologist Dr. Gabriela Mocho (Austria), archaeologist Dr. Maria Coto-Sarmiento (Spain) and paleoanthropologist Dr. Mirriam Tawane (South Africa).

The 2025 conference brought together women scientists from more than 20 countries representing almost every continent. Our palaeontologist Dr. Darya Dankina, who is also a member of the VCWAP Scientific Committee, is actively contributing to the organisation of this conference.
