Interaction of the environmental factors was investigated by transplanting plants from natural coenopopulations into field collection. Observations on phenology and growth rate of Hypericum perforatum and H. maculatum were performed in the Scientific Experimental Station of the Institute of Botany. Variability of morphologic characteristics of H. perforatum and H. maculatum accessions is lower than among plants from the same natural coenopopulation, still the differences among accessions remain.

Keywords: Hypericum perforatum, H. maculatum, growth rate, phenological phases, morphologic variation.

The phenology and yielding of lingonberry cultivars ‘Sanna’ and ‘Sussi’ in East Lithuania are described. The shrubs of ‘Sanna’ and ‘Sussi’ cultivars planted in transition mire peat during 3 to 4 years formed a dense soil cover. Their berries were larger than those of natural plants. The ‘Sanna’ and ‘Sussi’ cultivars blossomed by 1 to 2 weeks earlier than natural lingonberry, and that increased the chance of flower demages by late frosts.

Keywords: lingonberry, cultivars, cultivation, phenology, yielding.

Three vascular plant species (Agrimonia pilosa, Dianthus arenarius, and Linaria loeselii) listed in the Annex II of Habitat Directive are proposed to include into the list of legally protected species of Lithuania. New observation data revealed the necessity to change categorisation of two species (Dactylorhiza traunsteineri and Pulsatilla patens). Astragalus cicer, Colchicum autumnale, and Dactylorhiza russowii are proposed to exclude from the list of legally protected species. Dactylorhiza russowii should be treated as younger synonym of Dactylorhiza traunsteineri. Short comments and arguments on each species are presented.

Keywords: protected species, Red Data Book, Habitat Directive, Lithuania.

Results of the investigations on bryophytes in Viešvilė Strict Nature Reserve (Lithuania) are presented. In total 208 bryophyte (57 hepatics and 151 moss) species were registered; one hepatic species (Riccardia chamaedryfolia) is new to Lithuania. Eighteen species from the Red Data Book were registered during the study. Five areas within the territory of the Strict Nature Reserve, rich in bryophytes and rare bryophyte species, are proposed as important bryophyte areas.

The Dactylorhiza genus in Lithuania is represented by 8 species. Revision of herbarium material revealed that many specimens collected till 1996, due to some mistakes in the keys of identification, were identified erroneously. The morphological variability of important features are studied, and a new key for species identification is given in this paper; the distinctive features of the Dactylorhiza taxa in Lithuania and some particular cases of infraspecific variability are discussed.

Keywords: Dactylorhiza, Orchidaceae, identification, Lithuania.

The inventory of plant species of mixed deciduous, birch and pine groves and fragments of oak juveniles, significant to the aesthetic quality of scenery and observation spots in the Pavilniai Regional and Trakai Historical National Parks, was carried out in 2001–2002. Scenic spatial structure of these grove and forest fragments was evaluated and their ecoaesthetic quality was determined.

Keywords: scenery, vascular plant, vegetation, forest fragments, groves, Lithuania.

n Lithuania, meteorological conditions during the vegetative period of Humulus lupulus are usually variable, but still appropriate for its growth and yielding. Phenological peculiarities and yielding of twelve Humulus lupulus cultivars were studied. Dependence of yield quantity and quality on meteorological conditions is discussed.

Research results on seasonal development, tolerance to unfavourable environmental factors, disease and pest resistance of highbush blueberry (Vaccinium ×covilleanum Butkus et Pliszka) and lowbush blueberry (V. angustifolium Ait.) are summarised. The suitability of Lithuanian mesoclimatic regions for their cultivation is evaluated.

Keywords: Vaccinium, Ericaceae, plant introduction, mesoclimatic regions, Lithuania.

Life and scientific activity of the famous Lithuanian botanist Aleksandra Tučienė (1923–2003) is described. Her works in the fields of phytocoenology, floristics, and conservation of botanical diversity are analysed. List of publications of A. Tučienė is presented.

Teesdalia nudicaulis was known occurring in South and South East Lithuania only. New locality of this species was revealed in the Nemunas Delta Regional Park, in forest Leitgiris (Šilutė district). Short information on the habitat of Teesdalia nudicaulis is presented.
