Meeting of the Standing Commission on National Plant Genetic Resources

On 17 June 2026, the Standing Commission on National Plant Genetic Resources established by Order No. D1-243 of the Minister of Environment of the Republic of Lithuania “On Approval of the Composition and Regulations of the Standing Commission on National Plant Genetic Resources” held a meeting at the Nature Research Centre (Žaliųjų ežerų St. 47, Vilnius). The meeting was attended by representatives of various scientific and academic institutions of  the country, who gathered to discuss the most important issues regarding the conservation of Lithuania’s plant genetic resources.

At the beginning of the meeting, Commission Secretary Jolanta Nainienė reviewed the implementation of the decisions made at the previous meeting. Most of the meeting was devoted to the presentation and approval of the lists of plants proposed for designation as national genetic resources.

Jolanta Nainienė presented the list of forest seed stands and selected trees. The lists of genetic resources for agricultural plants—cereals and grasses—were provided by specialists from the Institute of Agriculture at the Lithuanian Research Centre for Agriculture and Forestry (LAAMC): Algė Leistrumaitė, an agronomist and plant breeder from the Department of Cereal Breeding, and Eglė Norkevičienė, Head of the Department of Grass Breeding. The list of ornamental plants was presented by Senior Specialist Dr. Gitana Štukėnienė, while the list of populations and field collections of medicinal and aromatic plants was presented by Senior Specialist Aida Juškauskaitė.

The meeting also featured a presentation on the seed (genetic) plots selected in 2025 for the in situ conservation of populations of medicinal and aromatic plants, as well as wild relatives of cultivated plants. These plots were presented by NRC researcher Juozas Labokas.

The meeting concluded with a tour of the Nature Research Centre’s field plant collections.
