We lost our colleague, ichthyologist Dr Saulius Stakėnas



1995 –  graduate of Vilnius University, Faculty of Natural Sciences

1993–1995 – senior laboratory assistant at the Institute of Ecology

1995–1998 – assistant at  the Institute of Ecology

1998–2002 – doctoral student (in 2002 – PhD, doctoral dissertation "Habitat selection strategy by 0+ fishes in the rivers of Lithuania").

2002–2003 – Researcher at the Laboratory of Ecology and Physiology of Hydrobionts, Institute of Ecology.

2004–2005 – Researcher at the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (CEFAS), United Kingdom

2006–2011 – Senior Researcher at the Laboratory of Ecology and Physiology of Hydrobionts, Institute of Ecology, Vilnius University

From 2011 –  Senior Researcher at Nature Research Centre


          Dr Saulius Stakėnas' major research interests were ichthyology, fisheries and ecology. He was the initiator of telemetric investigations of fish migration in Lithuania, investigated fish behaviour and migration in nature and in fish passages, as well as invasive fish and HPP impacts on migrating fish. Dr Stakėnas was a scientific supervisor of doctoral students both at Vilnius University and NRC. He headed over 20 and participated in over 60 national and international projects. S. Stakėnas was an expert in managing and reconstructing European eel, Atlantic salmon and trout, and Atlantic sturgeon stocks and was an active nature protection specialist and consultant on the issues of fish passages, HPP impacts and removal of dams.

         Dr S. Stakėnas was an author or co-author of more than 30 peer-reviewed scientific articles and many popular science publications.

         The colleagues will remember Saulius as joyful, diligent and always full of enthusiasm and scientific ideas, a true patriot of Lithuania.
